Soldier’s Cross to be Erected Downtown
ADJ. American Legion and Chaplain VFW
The Local American Legion Post 252 and VFW Post 10194 of Grass Lake in co-operation with the Knights of Columbus, Fourth Level, Patriotism, are in the process of raising the funds to purchase and install a Soldiers Cross (also called a Battlefield Cross, Fallen Soldier Battle Cross) at the Veteran’s Memorial in downtown Grass Lake.
We hope to have it permanently set at the site by Memorial Day. It will be a beautiful addition to the memorial, and will be a constant reminder of the cost of our freedom.
A great number of young men and women from the Gras Lake area have served, and are serving in the military today. So this will be a constant reminder of the sacrifices made on our behalf.
If you would like to share in this cause with us, you may by sending a contribution to the American Legion, Post 25 or VFW Post 10194, to PO Box 523, Grass Lake, MI 49240.
Although the Battlefield Cross itself is not an official military honor, it does play a part in the memorial ceremony as a visible reminder of the fallen soldier.
The helmet and identification tags signify the fallen soldier, their names never to be forgotten. The inverted rifle with bayonet signals a time for prayer, a break in the action to pay tribute to our friend. The combat boots, worn and dirty, represents the final march of the soldier’s last battle.
Grass Lake’s Veteran’s Memorial is located downtown next to the Library.
